<image:caption>Like a tributary—a river or stream that feeds a larger river or lake—composer and accordion virtuoso Guy Klucevsek (1947–2025) nourished a thriving community of accordionists in New York and beyond. With this performance, taking our inspiration from Guy’s international accordion supergroup Accordion Tribe, we pay tribute to his original musical mind, sly sense of humor, and generous spirit: Amy Denio Robert Duncan Melissa Elledge Peter Flint Will Holshouser Nathan Koci Mayumi Miyaoka Dean Olsher Kamala Sankaram Jeanne Velonis photo credit: Liora Codor</image:caption>

<image:caption>I especially appreciate how Rick is uninterested in the inside-baseball trivia that plagues so many music interviews. Instead, we talk about the various ways that music intersects with life, the universe, and everything. Essentially, this is an article about the things that matter most in the world. It was such a pleasure to go through this process with him.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Updates - See you on the radio</image:title>
<image:caption>Thanks so much to Ken Field for closing out The New Edge today on WMBR, Cambridge with my version of Mentre l’erbetta. If you’re a Stravinsky fan, you’ll recognize it as one of the sources for Pulcinella. The show will be archived on the WMBR website for two weeks. It was double fun for me because I was back-to-back with Amy Denio, who become my role model the moment I interviewed her in the early days of the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet (now known as The Tiptons) in the late 1900s. When you’re over at Bandcamp, check out her new album Varianti. I’m planning to learn her Raven Waltz on the accordion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - April 5 Is Bandcamp Friday - What is Bandcamp Friday? Good question. But first: What is Bandcamp?</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s the best option for musicians distributing music online. My debut album, Letters of Transit from Adhyâropa Records, is available on all the major streaming sites, but as everyone knows, even long-time, established musicians make a pittance there. For musicians seeking a fair deal, Bandcamp is the only game in town. And on the first Friday of every month, Bandcamp offers an even better deal to musicians by sharing more of the proceeds. For these reasons, I ask listeners to support Bandcamp. Especially on the first Friday of the month! To find Letters of Transit on Bandcamp, and, if you wish, to follow me, please click here. And thanks for listening.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Album release: Letters of Transit launches today - And look at this collection of phenomenal musicians performing alongside me:</image:title>
<image:caption>Meg Okura, violin David Bertrand, bass clarinet Rez Abbasi, guitar George Farmer, bass (tracks 1-3, 5, 9) Jerome Harris, bass (4, 6, 8) Willie Martinez, drums/percussion (2-3, 5, 9) Satoshi Takeishi, drums/percussion (4, 6, 8) Rachelle Garniez, vocal (2) Suzzy Roche, vocal (7) I feel so lucky to have them here interpreting my compositions. All of them gave from their deepest selves, and in my book that is the greatest gift a musician can offer.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - “Hymn,” featuring Suzzy Roche, available today</image:title>
<image:caption>When I received a commission in 2020 from Bachtopus to write an accordion quartet, I used this melody as the basis for a set of variations called “Waiting to Be Born.” Later, with Suzzy Roche’s voice in my head, I set the same melody to words. “Hymn” is getting played on the radio — last week on Accordion Noir from CFRO in Vancouver, and this coming Saturday on The Midnight Special from WFMT in Chicago (fun fact: The Midnight Special first went on the air 71 years ago and the host was Mike Nichols). Sung by Suzzy Roche with accompaniment by Meg Okura (violin), Rez Abbasi (guitar), David Bertrand (bass clarinet), and me (accordion), “Hymn” is available today on Bandcamp.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - “Forget I Was Ever Here,” sung by Rachelle Garniez, released today</image:title>
<image:caption>This was my countertransference — the feelings for the client that arise in the therapist. Eventually, my private working-out of these emotions took the form of this original song, “Forget I Was Ever Here',” which I wrote for Marian. A part of me asked: How dare I? What right did I have, as a white male, to presume to find common ground with Marian’s emotional world? But Marian accepted my invitation to make music together. What I had going for me is that I love and had learned the musical tradition she came from. And I knew what it was like to share a home with someone who was violent, and the need to flee for safety. Unlike Marian, who had the courage to run, I enacted this need for self-protection only in my musical imagination.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My own inner emigration took several forms, through space and time. For one, I developed an unforgiving addiction to Duolingo. The upside was that it allowed me to imagine myself in any number of places around the globe. On top of that, a concurrent mental journey involved moving backwards in time, rooting up any information the internet could reveal to me about my ancestors. The downside: I learned some disturbing things! More on that later.</image:caption>
