Memorial Day 2006, Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Hooray for the marching band, and for the basset hound trotting alongside the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It was perfect, a tableau free of irony, worthy of Norman Rockwell.

Until the speaking started.

In particular, the singsong ode to those who gave their lives, from the earliest days of the Republic. And as the history of conflict passed from Korea, through Vietnam and Desert Storm to the present, I found myself asking, What rhymes with “died in vain?”
