Well That Was Dispiriting

It's no longer possible for a person of conscience to vote his or her, um, conscience. How crazy is that?

Maybe because I cast my first vote in Connecticut, where Lieberman was a Democrat and Weicker a Republican, I used to take pride in voting for whoever I thought was the best candidate, regardless of party. I've been grateful for every Bloomberg who comes along and helps render the two-party system meaningless.

Today I held my nose and voted a straight ticket. To do anything else on Election Day 2006 would be irresponsible.

There are many things to lament about the current state of American politics. The necessity to vote strategically, to revert to juvenile, binary thinking, is one of the most lamentable.

New York's voting machines have a single lever that make it easy to cast all your ballots for a single party. No such luck in Stockbridge, which uses paper ballots. A felt tipped pen is required. And real commitment.
