Errata Newyorkiana II?

The puzzle: Monday's New York Sun.
The answer: ED KOCH.
The clue: '80s Gracie Mansion Resident.

Is it true? The story goes this way: as with Bloomberg, Koch never occupied the mayor's residence, but for the opposite reason. He didn't want to risk losing his rent-controlled studio on Washington Square.

Anyone?

According to an 8/18/80 article in Time: At first [Koch] even refused to live in the mayoral residence, Gracie Mansion, a large colonial house overlooking the East River; Koch now grudgingly spends most week nights there for convenience.

On weekends he heads for his bachelor pad in Greenwich Village—a one-bedroom apartment near Washington Square Park....Koch has had the rent-controlled apartment since the earlier '60s and now pays only $257 a month, a steal by any New York standards.

You should not be apologizing for contributing a spark of activity to a blog where even a tumbleweed that could catch fire hasn't been seen in 48 hours. Nor should you be apologizing when all your wiktionary link shows is a reference to nouns ending in -iana.

This is what I was puzzling over. If you were to number your entries and insist on the concept of things Newyorkiana (other than "stuff"), I personally think you would call them "Erratum Newyorkianum II," etc. What do *I* know. But you will notice that DO himself is not sure, and asked us.

Lastly, I don't think Marvin Gaye would apologize for this:

I used to go out to parties
And stand around
'Cause I was too nervous
To really get down
And my body yearned to be free
So I got up on the floor and found
Someone to choose me
No more standin' along the side walls
Now I've got myself together, baby
And I'm havin' a ball
Long as you prove it
There's always a chance
Somebody watches
I'm gonna make romance
With your body, ooo baby, you dance all night
Get down and prove it, feel all right
(repeat and fade):
Keep on dancin'
Got to give it up

I don't know what all of it means, but I'm pretty sure it's intended as flattering and positive. Dean, give it up!

I have kind of an odd incident to verify his living there. I was creating an illustrated poster for the Charter Revision Commission back when Koch was mayor. The drawing was a citylike flow chart, and I chose Gracie Mansion to represent the mayor. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any pictures showing all the parts of the building I needed, so I got permission to go up there and make some sketches. When I was done, I was given a tour inside but had to be quickly hustled out when Mayor Koch's arrival for the night was imminent. The secretary explained, "He doesn't like coming home to strangers." -Patrick Merrell
