Okay, I've Done It

I've gone and solved my first sudoku. My first half dozen, actually. After all, Al-Anon says you should go to six meetings before deciding it's not for you. Just as I suspected, I've decided sudoku is not for me. To be honest, I'm unable to imagine how it could be for anyone. I don't think I've ever felt quite so baffled by an activity. Even with pastimes that leave me totally cold—sports, for example—I'm usually able to grasp why they might speak to others. My complaint about sports has always been that there's nothing at stake. Sudoku is so stake-less it makes it seem as if the fate of the earth depends on the final score of every last Little League game.

I had hoped there might be some glimpse of that sensation of pure mind, a universe devoid of words and populated only by Platonic ideals. But no, not even that. Just plain, old-fashioned tedium.

What is the big fuss all about? Anyone? Anyone?

Hey, welcome back.

I'm also puzzled (groan) by the popularity of sudoku. You'd think I'd be the target audience for this - although it's more a logic problem than math, I was a statistics major and actuary in a former life. I have an addictive personality. I'm certainly a puzzle person.

When I first heard about this sudoku craze, I remembered proofreading Dell variety puzzle books and coming across Number Place (which is actually sudoku). It didn't affect me in any way.

Anything that's good for the puzzle world is good for crosswords, so I have no problem with sudoku's success. I just don't get it.

Cross sums, on the other hand...I'm hopelessly addicted! That's always been my absolute favorite type of puzzle (I'm test-solving some right now).
