Nickeled and Dimed

Why do I insist on separating the coins before dumping them into the Penny Arcade (which smartly does the job for you)? Maybe the C in OCD does stand for “crossword” after all.

3/4 of a Mott’s jar (i.e., about 18 oz. of nickels)=$18.05
1/3 of a qt. container of dimes=$60.45

Among the rejects: two coins stuck together by some unknown goo (Penny Arcade doesn’t accept filthy lucre), and a nickel-sized coin from the United Arab Emirates featuring an antelope (25 fils, a denomination that, as far as I know, has not appeared in any crossword puzzle I have ever done).

I took 2 bags (one in each hand, to balance the weight) of coins to Commerce Bank today. Though painstakingly separated during accumulation, I just dumped them in the bags for transport - my version of wild rebellion.

Ooh, that was fun! I thought it would be more than $37.91, though. There are still the pennies in the grey metal bank, for which I was too lazy to unscrew a screw (plus it was heavy enough as it was), and a few quarters for future redemption.

I'm embarrassed to say I'm still trying to figure out how Dean got $60.45 from his dime collection, though I admit I have always been TERRIBLE at math (especially story problems). Obviously it has something to do with the 1/3 quart (which is 10.666666 oz.), but then (as per usual) I have no idea what to do next.

Theory #1: Stray nickel.
Theory #2: Penny Arcade lies. (She does have a hard time with her job, thinking that her bags are full when they're not. I think she just can't count.)

Has Penny Arcade been audited? With all those dimes and nickels, I really did think my total would be higher. Oh well, it's still mondo neat. So neat I might go again tomorrow with some more coins I didn't realize I had (and some I did... it's all talked about on my LJ)

Oh, and I forgot to mention that of the 7 books I got at the Symphony Space book sale next door to Commerce Bank, 2 were: "The Next Big Thing" by Johanna Edwards and "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich. Spooky, huh? But both were on my long-kept "books I want to read" list.
